Come on by.
UBC SALA Reverse Crit
The Field Collective is excited to invite you to UBC SALA: REVERSE CRIT, the second iteration of this event, where we ask two brave firms to present their work for feedback from students at UBC SALA. Featured for this iteration Studio Balcaen Kwan will show a mixed-use project and Innes Yates Architecture will show a new home
BOSS Shop Tour
BOSS, a BCollective company, has offered to show us their shop, which is located at 271 Central St. (behind Fontile on Terminal Ave). Urbanjacks (See Here) shares the shop space with them, making it a two-for-one.
BCollective is a builder looking to employ modern construction techniques, like prefabrication, to create more sustainable housing in Metro Vancouver.

Plex Appeal
Cities across the province are starting to receive building permit applications fitted to their new zoning bylaws. In this time of new possibilities for architecture and design, the Field Collective asked its members to dive into the new rules to discover what unique opportunities for living together they make possible. Each architectural practice has chosen a municipality and proposed a design that conforms to the new SSMUH rules in that city. Among the design responses you’ll find a wide range of homes suited to all kinds of residents and neighbourhood conditions.
THIRD SPACE OPEN HOUSE
Field Collective and Third Quadrant Design are hosting a meet-and-greet for architects, mechanical engineers, building scientists, building analysts, and envelope consultants at Third Space at UBC. Adam Rysanek will give a tour of the student-built hempcrete building on campus and show off the latest performance data for the project.
For those who don't know, this project is one of the first hempcrete public buildings in BC, constructed for the Solar Decathlon in 2023. The properties of hempcrete, a nonstructural material (so far), eliminate the need for vapour barriers, insulation, and rain screens. Hempcrete is poured around a traditional light wood framed structure and can simply be finished with plaster on the exterior for weatherproofing. Its thickness provides the necessary insulation. Its higher thermal mass reduces heating and cooling demands by lowering temperature fluctuations. It can transform building construction by reducing our dependency on high-cost, complex building systems. Oh yes, and the lime in the mix absorbs carbon over time, making it carbon-negative. It's a magic material whose only downside is it's not readily available. Apparently, there is a higher value use for the plant. Who knows.

RAIC CLOSING PARTY
Hey Field Collective,
In case you haven’t heard, six small architecture practices have been working with six drag performers over the last several weeks to create the FIERCEST closing night party the RAIC has ever seen - MASQUE. And it all goes down a week from now. There will be props, there will be hats, there will be shade!! Suffices to say, we’re very excited.
The RAIC has given Field Collective access to a limited number of discounted tickets. The discounted tickets are $96.75 dollars for RAIC members/ $119.25 for non-RAIC members.
NEW TOOLS
The Field Collective is excited to invite architects, designers and members of the public to our first online edition of NEW TOOLS, a series of lectures on how small architecture practices can harness new technologies to simplify workflows and unlock new ways of designing in an evolving world.
NEW TOOLS¹ will host Stuart Lodge of Intelligent City as guest speaker where he will explore the intersection of multiple tools to enable different workflows (and how these can be scaleable to smaller practices).
This free online event will start at 12:00pm on April 17th and is open to the general public. Looking forward to seeing you there!
SLIP UP SHOW DOWN
To design is to err. Join us in an evening under Chatham House Rule where experienced practitioners compete to see who can share the most nightmarish design practice stories.

SMALL PRACTICE MARKETPLACE
We are excited to invite you to a market hall-style event bringing together architects, designers and members of the public to meet the folks behind BC’s small architecture practices at 529 Carrall Street in Vancouver, BC.
Doors open at 5:30 before our founding members share a short word towards 6:00pm about our goals as a collective. Come early to say hi, have a drink, and dance a bit while we forge a new culture of design in our province.
Eventbrite ticket not required for the marketplace: come one, come all!
PUBLIC LAUNCH: REVERSE CRIT
Dear Field Collectivists,
We are excited to invite you to PUBLIC LAUNCH: REVERSE CRIT, the first event of The Field Collective, a network uniting small architectural practices across British Columbia to share collective knowledge, encourage collaboration and steer a new culture of design in our province.
In the spirit of uniting practitioners, current students and the wider public, our first event will feature several small practices who will present in-progress work to students for feedback. Bring your thirst and a constructively critical gaze!
Warmly,
The Field Collective
